Who is SOIO?
The School of Information Operations (SOIO) is a training institution which offers industry-leading courses in defence-related fields. Working in collaboration with DEWC in Australia and Leonardo in the UK, SOIO delivers high quality training in electronic warfare to defence professionals across Australia.
They have been supporting and meeting the growing requirement for defence-related training in all operational domains of interest to the Australian Defence Force (ADF), Defence Industry and academia.
We worked with SOIO to build a website that was designed to transform leads into sales.
With a modern website design and cutting edge sales integrations, SOIO is now ready to attract leads and customers with less pressure on their sales team.
What was their problem?
SOIO were HubSpot CRM customers, but their website was built in an outdated and difficult to update legacy CMS. More specifically, to update their website content, the SOIO team had to ask for help from a third party developer.
Not only did this mean that their website was visually behind their central competitor’s site, but it also meant that updating their website with new courses, urgent course information, and changes to their business was time-consuming and frustrating. They needed a website that could help them better market their events and make quick changes. The website showcased the breadth of courses that SOIO offers, but there was no option to buy these courses online. As SOIO wanted to focus on selling the short courses online, their website was no longer fit for purpose.
This was both a point of frustration amongst the team and a needless expense for SOIO.
Their needs
A modern website that helped sell seats on the short courses.
Migrating from WordPress to HubSpot CMS to in order to easily make changes to the website.
Improving user experience through the website processes.
Integrate an eCommerce platform with HubSpot to provide courses as well as tracking return on investment.
Increasing leads to the website and attracting new subscribers.
What we did
HubSpot CMS and CRM
Working with our graphic designer, web developer, and copywriter, we onboarded SOIO to HubSpot CMS, complete with a new website design and new SEO-ready copy.
With the new website in place, we then got to work on building their sales platform. We built their courses page and separated each course based on the clearance requirements. Next, we had to find an eCommerce solution that suited SOIO’s industry and integrated with the HubSpot CRM.
We settled on Ecwid, with Zapier acting as the go-between to update the data in HubSpot CRM. This integration took the pressure off the sales team and also removed friction from the sales process, as customers were able to purchase short courses without having to speak directly to the sales team.
Challenges
One of the unique challenges with this client was born from their industry - defence.
As a defence training organisation, SOIO offered courses that had varying degrees of clearance requirements.
We needed to prompt people with the clearance they’d need before they booked their course. Additionally, we would have to provide a system by which proof of this clearance could be provided.
I think the result we got was nothing short of excellent. There's no doubt about that. I'm very grateful for all the team, all the Refuel team and what they’ve delivered - it's excellent.

The results
Today, they have a modern, responsive, conversion focused website that their own team can update. In addition, their sales and enrolment team is now greatly supported by the eCommerce integrations we implemented into HubSpot.
Speaking on the project, Craig Simpson, Sales Manager, said that the finished product was a refreshing change:
“It's great to be able to just add courses, course descriptions or change photos. Essentially, doing all the things that you probably would expect to be able to do as, you know, the owner of a website, but now we can finally do it.”
“In terms of tackling the problem and implementing feedback and stuff, was that Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, we're very happy with what we have from, from the original scope of work, to what we have now. It's, been a very good project.”
“We've got 100 percent control over the whole website front end, backend, you know, the process, all the stuff that gets logged into HubSpot - the end product is excellent. It's an excellent basis to build from there for our team at SOIO.”
In conclusion
Using HubSpot, we were able to improve the look and feel of the SOIO website and increase their ability to deliver courses in the process.
